The website is currently under construction and may change from time to time, but the domain name should remain the same. A temporary forum has been established to meet new members and build a team to develop an independent game titled: Interstellar or INT for short. You can access that here: http://interstellargame.freeforums.net/
If viewing the forum you should introduce yourself, experience, and what you wish to accomplish or do for the team in the “General Board” section. I will move you to an appropriate group after that.
I want to talk a little about the game itself at this point. What is the purpose of the game? What do I want? What is the general design? How do you fit in? What do we need to make it?
Well the game is called Interstellar and it is set against the backdrop of an Interstellar War between two emergent factions. Hence the name of the game, but the player does not necessarily need to tie themselves to either group. The game is an rpg so first and foremost there has to be choice which I hope we can adequately accomplish.
The general theme of the game is a Science Fiction, space simulator, where you command your own starship, but work mostly in a region of space known as wild space which will have an almost “American Western” feel to it. This genre has been popularized by shows such as “Firefly” and is known as a Sci-Fi, Western. I want the game to reflect this theme. Additionally, in terms of PC Gaming, I want the game to be a roguelike simulator. Meaning that every time you play it different things can happen. Also, it will be played as a RPG where you collect crew members and explore different planets on foot to acquire currency, weapons, armor, and loot. In sum, the game is a Sci-Fi, western, roguelike, rpg-with elements of dungeon crawling.
The purpose of the game is to add a title to a genre that has long been empty and to give people a chance to explore space with a team of people and allow them to craft their own destiny in the stars. What do I want and how do you fit in? I want people with a passion for gaming, science-fiction, and rpg’s. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have experience in the field. We can find a place for you. I will need writers, coders, modelers, animators, programmers, concept artists, even a good website host would be nice, and someone skilled at starting a PR campaign or at least interested in doing so. What do we need to make it? Well, we need all of the above.
Goals: I imagine this going one of two ways. For a long time I have watched independent games rise and fall. Some take years to develop and never make it out. I want this game to make it out and to acquire a fanbase before it arrives on a platform such as Steam. This means we will need to work hard to make it, but a game of this size and scope may take years to develop and by the time we are ready to release things may have changed. How do we combat this? I believe we should work on a two phase release and let me explain below.
Phase One: Work on a “Untitled Gameplay Demo” set in the Interstellar, INT, game universe that we are building. The Demo will have our core mechanics, quests, rpg, Sci-Fi, western feel, crew members, combat, loot, dialogue, story. In my mind it can’t be roguelike since this will be a small demo of one mission or quest, but it will reflect the purpose of the game in all other respects. Our demo will show the public that we are serious and are creating a great game. Once the Demo is completed we will send it to reviewer sites like IGN and Gamespot. We will release it for free on our, hopefully, new website that allows for public downloads and has it’s own hosted forum. With the demo we can start a proper PR campaign and get people interested. At this point we can launch a kickstarter campaign to acquire greater funding. With this funding we will provide for a team of concentrated people, hopefully the same that worked on the demo, to continue work on the greater game at large. With this money we can pay your bills and allow you to work on the game full-time. It will also allow the public to get involved with the crafting of the game by choosing donor rewards so that they feel integrated into the product.
Phase Two: We use the kickstarter money to fund the core game and set a timetable for a closed beta, public beta, and general release on a platform such as Steam within a year’s time. I plan to form a LLC for this and anyone on the core team who is interested in joining may do so. This will be our first game, but not our last. Revenue sharing from the sale of the game to the public will be split amongst everyone who worked on it in an equitable fashion as well as the kickstarter funds.
That is my general plan. I have a rough draft for a game design document that needs some help. Anyone who wants to directly help me craft the game may do so. Anyone interested in building it, writing for it, designing art, making music may do so. Just come on over to the forum and let’s get this process started.
